John Mahama asks EC not to disenfranchise eligible voters

2023-09-06

The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to expand the limited voter registration exercise and decentralise it to all electoral areas.

In a Facebook Live session on Wednesday, John Mahama emphasised that every Ghanaian deserves the chance to exercise their democratic right, and the EC must facilitate the registration exercise to make it accessible to every citizen.

"Every Ghanaian deserves a chance to exercise his democratic right. I strongly urge the Electoral Commission to facilitate the registration exercise in all its electoral areas to allow for easy access and reduce the burden on the citizenry in their quest to register", he stated.

The former Ghanaian president also challenged the EC to be transparent with the processes leading up to the limited voter registration exercise. The NDC., he said, must publish the names and pictures of officials for the exercise.

"As has been requested in a formal letter to the Commission by the General Secretary of the NDC, we want to know when the names and pictures of the Registration Supervisors, Registration Officers, Registration Assistants, and other officials for the exercises will be published at the district level, as stipulated by the EC regulations”, he added.

The NDC’s leader’s call comes ahead of the limited voter registration exercise scheduled by the EC from September 12, 2023, to October 2, 2023, for eligible Ghanaians who turned 18 years after the 2020 registration exercise and other eligible voters at its district offices.
